UX Meetup: Using code as a design tool

Nathaniel Flick talks about how using code as a design tool can bring designers and developers closer together, leading to a more seamless and collaborative workflow

Topic: Using code as a design tool
Presenter: Nathaniel Flick
Date: 3 April 2025

Using code as a design tool allows designers to empathise with developers, gaining valuable insights into how software is built. By bridging the gap between user needs and development through code, designers can foster greater empathy and collaboration throughout the design process.

This approach helps eliminate misunderstandings and removes the traditional “code handoff” in favour of a more integrated workflow. By leveraging design system components directly, designers and developers can work together more effectively to build new solutions. Understanding how code works enhances collaboration and streamlines the design-to-development process.

In this talk, you’ll get an introduction to using code as a design tool—no coding experience required! We'll explore practical examples of coded mockups using CodePen (codepen.io) to demonstrate how this approach can improve your design practice.
